The Everest Base Camp trek is the most popular of all treks with the obvious attraction of taking you to the base of the highest mountain in the world.  The base camp on the Nepalese side of the mountain is at 5364m.  Because of its popularity, there is a big choice of accommodation from simple tea houses to luxury lodges.  The trek passes through the fascinating Sherpa capital of Namche Bazar and the region is famous for its Sherpa villages and monasteries.  Most of the area is covered by the Sagamatha National Park, a habitat, for many species of plants and animals including 21 endemic species of tree and many animals and birds.  With luck you may see a red panda or snow leopard as you climb from juniper forests in the valleys up to the alpine areas with glaciers, snow and rock.  The trek begins with flight to Lukla and takes around 13 days allowing time for acclimatization to altitude.  The basic trek can be done by most people with average fitness and the more adventurous can attempt the summit of Kala Patar (5545m.) which affords breathtaking views.
